For a book originally written more than 50 years ago, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting has aged well. Broken down into five sections--introduction to stamp collecting, postal history and cover collecting, miscellaneous subjects, technical matters, and classification and identification--the book offers specific tips on starting a collection, properly handling and storing stamps, and choosing areas of specialization.

Although lacking information on recent developments, such as the widespread use of self-adhesives, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting provides invaluable information on paper types and printing and perforation methods used on stamps issued before 1960.

This book is not heavily specialized, but rather intended as an overview of stamp collecting and related matters. Helpful for the beginning philatelist, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting is also a useful reference for more advanced collectors.
